University of Nottingham
School of Mathematical Sciences
Division of Statistics
Research Associate/Fellow
Applications are invited for the above post, funded by the Wellcome Trust, to develop and apply model-based methods
of statistical inference to analyse detailed data sets on hospital infections.
The research project, under the supervision of Dr Philip O'Neill (Nottingham) and Dr Ben Cooper (Health Protection Agency
(HPA), London), will address a number of important questions relating to the epidemiology and population biology of multiply
antibiotic resistant organisms such as MRSA and GRE. This will be achieved by developing state-of-the-art approaches for
analysing hospital infection data sets using Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods. The project is multidisciplinary and
the person appointed will be expected to work closely with subject experts, using knowledge of the microbiology, epidemiology
and genetics of the pathogens to construct transmission models and interpret data.
Candidates should hold, or expect to obtain shortly, a PhD in a subject with a substantial mathematical or statistical
component. Previous experience of computer programming is essential. Familiarity with MCMC methods and stochastic
modelling is desirable and an interest in mathematical biology or infectious disease epidemiology will be a distinct advantage.
Salary will be within the Research Associate range £20,842 - £22,774 per annum, depending on qualifications and
experience (salary can progress to £25,633 per annum, subject to performance) or within the Research Fellow
range £23,457 - £28,850 per annum, depending on qualifications and experience (salary can progress to £33,445
per annum, subject to performance).
This full-time post is available immediately and will be offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of three years.
The person appointed will be based in Nottingham, but will have regular visits to the HPA in London.
Informal enquiries may be addressed to Dr O'Neill, tel: 0115 951 4939, fax: 0115 951 4951 or Email: [log in to unmask]
Candidates should send a detailed CV, together with the names and addresses of two referees, to
Dr P D O'Neill, School of Mathematical Sciences, The University of Nottingham, University Park, Nottingham, NG7 2RD.
Closing date: 20 January 2006.
