Head of Survey Methods Unit
The National Centre for Social Research (NatCen), the UK’s largest
independent social research organisation, is looking to appoint a Head of
its Survey Methods Unit based in London. The appointment will be at Board
level and the postholder will manage a Unit of about 10 researchers.
NatCen is an educational charity whose objective is “A Society Better
Informed Through High Quality Social Research” and has been going since
1969. It has been growing rapidly and now has an annual income of £25m+ and
some 100 researchers based in London and Edinburgh, as well as its own
operations function and a national fieldforce of nearly 1500 interviewers.
It does not carry out commercial work and its income is derived almost
entirely from research carried out for public bodies such as government
departments, research councils and foundations.
The Survey Methods Unit was set up in 1980 to increase awareness of good
survey practice within the survey research community, and to support NatCen
researchers in data collection, sampling, question testing, statistics,
secondary analysis and survey design. The Unit also carries out research
projects sponsored by other agencies.
The postholder, who will report directly to NatCen’s Chief Executive, will
be expected to manage and give direction to the Unit and make an important
intellectual contribution to the development of survey methodology both
within NatCen and in the social research community as a whole. They will
work closely with NatCen’s Quantitative Research Department and will also
be expected to play an active role on the Management Committee of NatCen
and to ensure that the development of survey methodology is fully
integrated into the development of NatCen as a whole. Experience of social
policy research and a wish to develop survey methodology and practice are
essential for the post. Previous management experience would be an advantage.
The salary for the post will be in the range £50k-£60k depending on
experience. NatCen provides a wide range of benefits including a generous
final-salary pension scheme. Appointment can either be on a permanent basis
or in the form of a 2 to 3 year secondment.
