How many lives are you saving?
Make your results really count!

Statisticians:
Band 2 (up to 2 posts) - starting salary range £36,884 - £39,500
Band 4 (1 post) - starting salary range £21096 - £21,660
Location: Bootle, Merseyside, UK

The Health and Safety Executive exists to ensure the proper control of
workplace risks, safeguarding the safety and well-being of the entire UK
workforce and the public at large. Our track record is impressive, giving
Britain one of the safest industrial cultures in the world; and our
attention is turning now towards work-related ill-health and risk
prevention.

The shift in emphasis is reflected in our strategic Revitalising Health and
Safety programmes - targeting, for example, chemicals, construction and the
public sector - and puts our analytical and statistical thinking at the
heart of policy. To meet changing expectations, the Executive's Corporate
Science and Analytical Services Directorate (CoSAS) is unifying and
strengthening its statistical function, creating a centrally managed but
outward looking Statistics Branch that will work with project teams in all
disciplines to provide statistical and epidemiological data, advice and
expertise.

For career statisticians, this is a superb opportunity to engage with an
organisation whose achievements produce real and tangible benefits, in work
that is intellectually stimulating, challenging and varied. Excellent
analytical skills are essential, naturally, but this is also an environment
that will call on your ability to develop as a relationship builder,
communicator and influencer both within HSE and further afield.

Applicants must have a good honours degree or postgraduate qualification in
Statistics, ideally, or a closely allied discipline with a substantial
statistical content; and between two and four-plus years' experience of
applied statistical analysis and interpretation which should have given you
a sound working knowledge of relevant IT tools such as SPSS, Stata or
Access. Other key requirements include confident written, spoken and
presentational communication skills and a flexible, creative and positive
approach to working within multidisciplinary teams.

You'd expect HSE to be at the forefront of good employment practice - and
you'd be right. We offer excellent support for professional development, a
competitive final salary pension scheme, and a family-friendly employment
policy (including part-time and job-share options).

Most Civil Service posts are open to UK national; Commonwealth citizens
[which includes British Dependent Territories citizens, British National
(Overseas) and British Overseas Citizens]; British Protected persons; EEA
national (including EFTA) of other Member States; and certain non-EEA
family members.
