Short Course: An Introduction to Genetic Epidemiology.
September 12-14 2005
The Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Unit (BBU) at Cardiff University, United
Kingdom, now offers the exciting new short course, "An Introduction to Genetic
Epidemiology". The course offers an introduction to the methods currently used
to interrogate genetic data from complex human disease studies and will focus on
gene mapping and characterization. Lectures will be given on current linkage and
association techniques and related practical sessions will allow participants to
gain hands on experience with real life data sets. The program is designed to
ensure participants are able to implement the required statistical methodologies
as well as providing essential guidance in the interpretation of results.
This course is aimed at investigators working on complex human disease and is
suitable for pre/post doctoral researches as well as senior staff members
wishing to better understand and use the statistical methodologies currently
employed. We will not assume detailed knowledge of statistics or genetics but
familiarity with the basics of these would be advantageous.
Topics to be covered in both lectures and computer practicals
-Basic statistics and genetics for genetic epidemiology
-Linkage Analysis
--including parametric and non-parametric analysis
-Association Analysis
--case/control and family based designs, haplotype analysis
