An opportunity has arisen for a full-time statistician to join the ALSPAC
(Children of the 90s) respiratory research group. ALSPAC is a unique
longitudinal study that has followed nearly 14,000 children from before
birth to investigate how genetics and environment interact to influence
health and development. ALSPAC is based within a dynamic and stimulating
research environment, where you will work alongside other statisticians and
a variety of research and support staff.
This post, which is for 30 months (2½ years) duration, has been funded by
Asthma UK, the largest British asthma charity, as part of its strategy for
early life asthma research. The project is part of an exciting development
that brings together all the major UK asthma birth cohorts in a research
network (STELAR). This post is a key component of the STELAR project and
you will have the opportunity to work with many of the leading asthma
researchers in the UK.
You will work on existing data within ALSPAC to devise novel approaches to
describing the different patterns of onset and progression of asthma during
early childhood and, under the guidance of the study steering group, to
analyse associations between early life exposures to environmental factors
and the onset of asthma in infants and young children.
Working knowledge of the SPSS or Stata statistical packages, and of
databases such as MS Access is desirable, as is experience in using
epidemiological/statistical methods to analyse large datasets. You should
have a postgraduate qualification (at least MSc level) in medical
statistics or a related discipline. Salary will depend on age and
experience.
It is anticipated that interviews will be held during the week comencing
20th June 2005. If successful, you may be appointed either on a fixed term
or a permanent contract depending on the extent of your previous relevant
research experience. Further information can be found at
