STUDENTSHIPS AT THE CENTRE FOR CENSUS AND SURVEY RESEARCH
CCSR is an interdisciplinary research centre in the School of Social
Sciences at the University of Manchester (rated 6* in the 2001 RAE). PhD
students join a diverse and thriving research programme and receive high
quality training and supervision tailored to their particular needs. Areas
of expertise include; Confidentiality and Privacy, Elections and Voters,
Population and Development, Statistical Methods, and Ethnicity, Gender and
Labour Markets.
We have the following range of funding opportunities for those interested in
studying for a PhD at CCSR (full details are available from

1. Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) awards
(Revised CCSR Deadline is 15 April)
For home and EU applicants, we have a prestigious ESRC 1+3 quota studentship
to award (comprising 1 year MSc research training + 3 years research). The
runner up candidate will be our nominated entry into ESRCs national 1+3
competition, with the School of Social Science guaranteeing funding for the
masters year, even if unsuccessful in the ESRC competition.
For those with ESRC recognized research training, we also support
applications to the ESRC +3 competition.

completed application forms required by 15 April at the latest (forms and

but CCSR will provide guidance on this process).
2. CCSR Studentship
We invite applications for a 3 year PhD studentship. This is open to both
home and overseas applicants. The deadline for applications for this award
is 1 June (though home and EU applicants are additionally required to submit
an application to the ESRC with CCSR as above). Applicants to this award
will also be considered for two prestigious School Scholarships.
