The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA,
www.mhra.gov.uk), an Executive Agency of the Department of Health, is
responsible for safeguarding public health by ensuring that all
medicines and devices for human use on the UK market meet the
appropriate standards of safety, quality and efficacy.
The MHRA pharmacoepidemiology research team is directly involved in the
evaluation of emerging drug safety issues, through provision of
epidemiological data and expertise. This team has a vacancy for a
statistician /epidemiologist (see

Purpose of role
You will input to the design of pharmacoepidemiology studies, manage and
analyse datasets for such studies derived from large primary care
databases and develop analytical methods for use in the
pharmacoepidemiological context. Critical assessment of statistical
analyses/epidemiological studies in safety issues, furthering the use
and understanding of pharmacoepidemiology tools and available data in
the evaluation of drug safety issues, and working with colleagues in
multidisciplinary assessment teams of pharmacists, scientists and
medical doctors.

Key responsibilities: 
Epidemiological/statistical input to pharmacovigilance risk assessment
and pharmacovigilance planning 
Analysis of drug exposure data for safety signal assessments 
Development of signal detection methodology 
Undertaking pharmacoepidemiological population based studies


Essential criteria to apply: (shortlist and interview criteria) 
A degree or postgraduate qualification in statistics/epidemiology (or
with a major statistical component) 
1 to 2 years working knowledge in medical statistics/epidemiology 
Proven experience in data management and analysis of large datasets 
Demonstrate effective communication skills, both written and verbal 
Proven ability to deliver to tight deadlines in a target driven
environment maintaining high standards of quality. 
Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work efficiently
within a multidisciplinary team and on own initiative. 
Ability to analyse and interpret complex data and make appropriate
recommendations under pressure
