4 Year Statistics PhD Studentship at Lancaster University
The Mathematics and Statistics Department at Lancaster University have
an EPSRC-funded studentship for a PhD student to work in any
area of statistics. As well as students with a strong background in
Statistics, the department is keen to encourage strong mathematics
undergraduates to apply, even if they have only a limited knowledge of
statistics.
Statistics research at Lancaster has an RAE rating
of 6*, and the statistics group has proven excellence in PhD
provision, as evidenced by EU funding for visiting European PhD
students, and being designated a Centre for Excellence in Teaching and
Learning for Postgraduate Statistics. The group is also one of the
largest in the country with around 15 members of staff, and 30 PhD students.
The research strengths of the group include Bayesian Statistics,
Computational Statistics, Extreme Value Theory, Inference for
Stochastic Processes, Social Statistics, Statistical Genetics, Medical
Statistics and Spatial Statistics (see
http://www.maths.lancs.ac.uk/department/research/statistics for more
information), and the successful applicant for the PhD studentship
would work in one of these areas.
Within the department there is a large range of postgraduate level
Statistics courses, which PhD students are able to attend to gain a
broad training in statistics. Thus we are able to provide suitable
training for mathematics undergraduates who lack a strong background
in statistics.
The studentship will be awarded for up to 4 years. This pays both Fees
and Stipend for a UK student. The stipend will start at 13,000 pounds
per year (an enhanced rate of 1,000 pounds above the standard EPSRC
amount). All PhD students have access to departmental laptop during
their studies.
For further information please contact the Postgraduate Tutor,
Dr. Paul Fearnhead ([log in to unmask]). For details of how
to apply, see
http://www.lancs.ac.uk/users/admissions/postgrad/pgform1.htm
where you can obtain electronic versions of the forms you need to fill
in and send to the university.
