Dear Colleagues,
At the University of Sheffield we recruit retired members of
academic staff to invigilate examinations. The rate of pay is
calculated per session (Morning, Afternoon, Early Evening) and is
on a scale dependent on the size and relative difficulty of the venue.
We are currently reviewing the rates that we pay and I would be
pleased to hear from institutions who manage invigilation in a
similar way and it would be helpful to have details of the rates paid.
In addition, I would also be pleased to hear from colleagues who
manage the collection of scripts (answer books) by academic
staff/departments. At Sheffield we ask that invigilation teams
return all scripts from the Exam Hall to the Exams Office before
collection by a representative from the relevant department. This
ensures that we account for all scripts before they are taken away
for marking. I would be interested to know how other institutions
deal with this process.
