As someone who has been a practising Pagan since my teens, can I say
what a pleasure it was to see someone recognise it in this way. It has
suffered from bad press over the years (some people still believe Pagan
means no religion or is similar to atheist or, even worse, links with
satanism!) but many Pagans are trying hard to establish recognition and
credibility for a religion which existed in this country long before
Christianity made the journey here and many argue is the native
religion. In the last national census, the Pagan Federation urged its
members to identify themselves as Pagans in an effort to increase
recognition and seeing another example of such positive action is very
heartening.

Lesley,
Thanks for this - it's very helpful. From our experience, we've decided
to put Lesbian/Gay rather than lesbian and gay as two separate
categories. This is firstly because (as several people pointed out on
their forms) we don't ask for heterosexual man/heterosexual woman, and
also because some lesbians prefer to describe themselves as gay women,
and so we then had to put the two categories togetehr to make them make
sense anyway.
I was interested to see that you had included Pagan. It's not
particularly a category we had considered. Could I ask why you decided
to include it?

Hi Mari
Thanks for this.
I am sending the proposed EO monitoring form that I hope to use for new
applicants.
The purpose of this is to scan it on an OMR system. So anything has to
be pencilled into record the data.
The Religion and Belief categories have even selected as the 7 largest
groups under the last census. Plus non belief. I also discussed this
with the Chaplain.
While we are adding "other" we won't actually record these as numbers
will be very small.. Unless we start to notice larger numbers coming
through.
All the best
Lesley

Lesley,
We have piloted collecting sexual orientation data. By just introducing
the monitoring, without significantly changing the information sheets
that are sent to explain why we are monitoring, or doing any other
prepartory work, we achieved a completion rate of around 50% - much
higher than I'd expected. We're now focusing on improving the
information sheet, and on making sure that the rest of the form is well
written (getting the right options for categories of sexual orientation,
ammending the 'marital status' monitoring).
We're considering whether to monitor religion and belief, and I'd really
like to hear from anyone who has done this.

Hi
Is anyone collecting data on Sexual Orientation and Religion and
Belief.? or know of other institutions that are?
I am looking to set up a scanning system for monitoring forms but need
to link these to the Trent system. It would be helpful to know if there
is a demand for this.
Please reply off line.
Thanks
