The Disability Discrimination Bill has been amended by the House of Lords
this month to extend protection to workers who have relapsed into
depression. The amendment was put forward by Tory peers, and covers people
who have suffered serious depression that has interfered with their ability
to function normally, have then recovered, but have suffered a relapse
within five years.
MPs from the main political parties have supported an Early Day Motion
(parliamentary petition) in support of Macmillan Cancer Relief's plea to end
cancer discrimination. The Early Day Motion (EDM) urges the Government to
amend the Disability Discrimination Bill currently going through Parliament,
so that everyone with cancer is protected from unjustified discrimination
from the point of diagnosis. The EDM states that the Government should not
press ahead with its plan to exclude certain cancers from the Bill.
The Bill was announced in the Queen's Speech in November 2004, and would
amend the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 so that - among other things -
protection would be extended to more people diagnosed with the progressive
conditions of HIV, MS and cancer.
