Verity/Peter -- I would very much like to attend the Research and Development workshop since this is exactly what my research has been approved to study at Oxford Brookes. Please let me know what else I need to do to register.
Thanks!

Subject: [ACCESSIBUILT] SPARC Update - free workshop on research and development for long term care, 2nd call for SPARC research awards
Date: Mon, 7 Nov 2005 20:39:52 +0000
Dear Colleagues
Workshops
Details of the 26th January SPARC workshop organised in conjunction with CCC to be held at the Guildhall, London are now available on the SPARC web site - www.sparc.ac.uk .
The theme "Research and Development for Long Term Care" will focus particularly on the provision of caring environments for those older people who may need to reside in institutional settings. It will look at issues arising from the design of care homes, the incorporation of new technology, and the future of extra care from the perspectives of practitioners and providers of facilities, and it will explore findings from the latest research on how good design and new technology can enhance quality of life. Because of space constraints there will be a limit on the places available so please be patient with Verity if you are placed on the waiting list. To avoid this, do not delay in letting us know if you would like to attend.
The SPARC workshop on "The Biology and Business of Stroke" on 14th December hosted by TVLSN is now fully booked, so a waiting list is in operation. However it may be possible to accept a few more participants to the workshop on 15th November hosted by Unilever on "The Business of Ageing Research" which as well as many leading national and international authorities on meeting the needs of older people will have a keynote address by Dr Irene Hoskins of the World Health Organisation.
There are no attendance fees for these workshops – just an enthusiasm for improving the quality of life of older people. Places must be requested by using the on-line Registration Form for the desired Workshop.
Second Call for SPARC Proposals
SPARC is again inviting proposals for pump-priming awards to support newcomers to ageing research. Details of this second call can be found at www.sparc.ac.uk . (Please note that only UK university employed staff are eligible for these awards.)
Recent Awards
Thirteen new ageing researchers, selected from a very competitive first round, will soon commence projects which range across basic and applied work in the fields of driver behaviour, transport planning, security in urban environments, housing design, packaging, exercise, cell, tissue and muscle ageing, and neurology. In addition the researchers will receive considerable other support, including mentoring, assistance in promoting their work and establishing themselves in the field, as well as the immense goodwill of many older people and organisations which work with and represent older people. More details are at www.sparc.ac.uk .
Kind regards
Peter Lansley
