Hi Sheila,
can I just add that involvement of disabled students and/or local access
group / access officer in the design process is important - they will be
able to give you support in reminding your 'designers' that the numbers
referred to in Part M and BS8300 (and at the risk of repeating myself from a
previous posting but this point is ALWAYS conveniently forgotten) are BARE
MINIMUM numbers and should always be exceeded where possible, if only
because doing so at design stage has a minimal cost implication compared to
retro-fitting when the spec is found wanting and that for many disabled
people the life of a building of 30 years or so gives them just one
opportunity during their lifetime to make that particular building
accessible, which makes any cost implications seem pretty paltry by
comparison!
rant over!
