the Blue Flag status for beaches is supposed to include access as part of
the criteria for gaining an award although the section on access is a bit
vague. Take a look at http://www.blueflag.org/Criteria/EuropeanBeaches -
'Safety and Services'. It would be great if access was a mandatory part of
gaining the Blue Flag.
In Pembrokeshire we have something like 10 beaches with this award. We have
tried to make some of our beaches more accessible by providing timber
walkways which are laid over the sand. They do afford some accessibility but
tend to move around due to the tides and the weather and have to be
re-positioned on a regular basis. This is quite labour intensive and often
involves the use of a tracked vehicle or JCB on a regular basis to ensure
that the walkway is always usable. Quite an expensive overhead.
We are currently looking at the posiibility of making wheelchairs (manual)
available fitted with balloon tyres which can traverse the sand (with a
helper). This needs to be properly managed though because these wheelchairs
are obviously quite bouyant and could be a danger to the user unless some
sort of guidance is given at the point of distribution.
I too would be very interested to hear of any guidance/standards etc.
Regards
Alan Hunt
