Thanks Marcus
I have another problem, it is with one of the designs of handrails
as shown in Diagram 7 AD Part M.
Is it possible to get the message to David Petherick?
I am ambulant but have upper and lower Spinal damage, and arthritis
in the shoulders, arms and hands.
Because of the additional pain in my shoulders and arms caused by
reaching out sideways to handrails mounted on top of walls and
additional weakness thus created I find these handrails are
completely unacceptable to me. I need my arms as close to the body
as possible.
Can the sketch showing handrails on the top of walls be deleted in
future amendments?
I avoid stairs except in extreme emergency, but when I have to use
them, I hold the handrail and lean forward with my forearm resting
on the top of the rail. See sketch attached.
When descending I move backward and rely heavily on a closed riser
to locate my foot position on the step tread. Open or partial risers
are a trip hazard. See Sketch.
If carrying out an Access Audit, I recommend handrails mounted on
the face of the wall.
With thanks

Subject: Part M and BS8300 Frequently asked questions
The following and the attachment are posted with Dave Petherick's
permission, hopefully the information will be on the ODPM website
within the next few days.
It covers:
Is the guidance in BS 8300, where it differs from the guidance in AD
M, an acceptable alternative? The definition of visual contrast in
Approved Document M para. 0.29 refers to a difference in light
reflectance values of 30 points - what does this mean and how is it
measured? Does the 'opening force' of doors in Part M 2004 equate to
'closing force' in BS 8300:2001? The guidance on handrail dimensions
in BS 8300 differs from that in AD M. Is the BS guidance an
acceptable alternative?
Thought you might find it useful.
Marcus
