I hope ACB and RCPath are stakeholders/have representation in this. The press release is so contradictory and very little mention of Quality or "evidence".I have real concerns about clinical governance and patient safety, we have a woman in a van in Harpenden, every Saturday that not only measures your blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol,Hb, but also PSA....!at vast expense.
Why don't the government look at Imaging...which is where there are real problems?
Since I have been a consultant this must be about the sixth review of Pathology services.
Looks like all POCT and big Factories. (Also it is a shame that PCTs cannot sort out Phlebotomy)
have a good weekend

Subject: New UK DH review of Pathology Services
ACB Executive have asked me to alert UK members that the DH has this
morning publised an important new document entitled -
Modernising Pathology: Building a Service Responsive to Patients
This outlines the establishment of -
"a new Pathology Service Review Panel, chaired by Lord Carter of Coles,
will be set up by the Department of Health with two members bringing:
* specialist technical and clinical knowledge of pathology
* knowledge of the commercial aspects of pathology/health services.
4.3 Its terms of reference will be:
To advise Ministers, in the context of current resource constraints, on the
timeliness, reliability, capacity and efficiency of current pathology
services in
England, benchmarked against international standards and the feasibility
of and efficiency benefits arising from wide-scale service reconfiguration,
innovation and modernisation and involvement of the independent sector.
4.4 The review panel will make recommendations to Ministers in spring
2006 and will undertake its work by:
* reviewing evidence from the professional, clinical, managerial,
economic and commercial literature
* holding meetings and workshops with key players including
patients and their carers
* visiting a range of pathology services."
Full text can be obtained only from the DH website at present -

accordingly as appropriate.
