spontaneous snap (for carol and postponed surgery)
i am thinking
about the distance between the heart
and the gut, the tapo/n
that stops the flow
i am sitting in this knot
of bulbous, barbell-shaped traffic in one zipcode
going to another
zipcode in the same city
nearly
an hour away in friday traffic
imagining i am your surgeon
planning my route to that mass
so-called “benign” in the colon
and i can’t get there
your heart is blocked and these same idiots who won’t stop
for yellow school buses, won’t move aside
for emergency vehicles. suddenly i feel about ten
stuck in a desk in a crowded row in a cramped classroom
hearing the ambulance, we learn to cross ourselves, send out
a prayer. i used to believe in that magic
that moment of “meditative expectancy”
and so here’s three hailmarys, two glorybees.

My friend Carol went for a routine (aren't routines unpleasant) colonoscopy and they found a mass. She had a presurgery nuclear stress test and they found a heart blockage. Now they believe the mass not to be so benign. And she had postponed the surgery earlier to travel to Mexico to be with a friend with brain cancer. I have known her since I was a kid in college and she is one of my closest friends in the community. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers.
