> Would
> we feel better about Stein's writing if she and Alice had been interned, or
> if they had not been loyal to their friendship with Fay?
Or would have a consciousness informed by holocaust facts du jour (if they
were not literally known and ignored by G &A) shaped and informed the
structure of the writing:
"A Nazi is a Nazi is a Nazi."
Would that phrase withheld itself within in a closed rhythmic/imagist frame
- or would the phrase have split open, unfolded and amplified (minimally)
into moral rebuke, image upon image?
What is done to keep the table set, ordered and aesthetically rendered (and
interestingly so under a cubist imperative) while ignoring those goods &
persons not permitted inside the door (unless it's those providing labor in
the kitchen).
Of course all this - the thought and critique is nothing new - while, still,
Rumsfeld smiles, speaks and strikes his fist on the podium and the
battalions march & the prison guards do what they have been instructed &
ordered, etc. At least - thank goodness or is it democracy? - some
information cracks through the frame, and some brave people are fanning the
terrible news.
This is going to be another long battle.
