G'afternoon, Roger,
How are your studies coming, by the way?
I can't remember many films, and that includes Beau Geste, tho I know I've seen it. My tendency is to take in all the beauties of landscape, faces, forms and costumes . . . and entirely miss a film's story and conversations (odd for a playwright, no?) Also, Gary Cooper, despite his real-life dapper dressing, never caught my attention. But since you see some relevance in the film, I'll Netflix it.
You sailed Norfolk sound?!!! (tell me what "sound" means, Roger; I've Zero Knowledge of ship, sailing, or sea jargon). In what capacity did you sail, for whom, and on what kind of ship?
You've brought forward for me quite a love-fear topic. The most beautiful day of my life (aside from giving birth to my son) was in Norfolk in a small craft, in Chesapeake Bay. I was fortunate to have a retired merchant mariner first mate as an explainer-companion who told me everything about what I was seeing. I was continuously thrilled with the sights of the ships so varied and stunning. We hailed a water taxi alongside our craft, and the taxier told us that he ferries folks from downtown Norfolk, usually, to Portsmouth.
After that trip, I became obsessed with having a boat---and very nearly bought one, until I forced m'sel' to listen to every single expert I could find----all of whom said DO NOT BUY THAT BOAT! The most telling of them was my insurer who asked what year the boat had been built. I said 1960, and he referred me to the yellow pages (phone book) for another insurer.
Next, I determined that to get on the water I would take sailing lessons, but my fear of being that vulnerable to the ocean overtook me, so I didn't follow thru with the lessons. But I STILL wanna get on the water (no, not swimming in it). Any suggestions? Advice? Do other people have such a strange caught feeling about oceans and sailing vessels?
And now to my Rhinemaiden persona: I have none. I always do what Patrick McManus wants me to do, and he wants me to mermaidly send him off on his Viking ship. I have suggested that I will accompany him and VB on his voyage, but will await his wishes about it. So it's mermaid attire, not pigtails and breastplates I'll be wearing.
Cheers,
Judy

I always liked Gary Cooper's Beau Geste.
I've sailed the Norfolk sound in fog and those carriers gave me the
heebie-jeebies. Big bastards the lot of them. Not too careful where
they plough either.
Maybe you could go down with Patrick and VB (which I tend to translate
as Visual Basic, no insult intended, although it should be called Vile
Basic) as a Rhinemaiden...do you have golden locks? pigtails? A large
shield? Big lungs?
