Written very fast after blowing up my free minutes this morning speaking
with my friend Wendy in Texarkana, TX. She has been half-awake for
several days, weeping, holding herself together. Her son, who I met
about 6 years ago in New York, MAY be the prisoner of the Superdome in
New Orleans. Better there than outside, but bad enough when you don't
even know whether the man's alive. As she puts it, he is the last man
in America without a cell phone. But like cells in Manhattan in the
hours following 9/11, a cell phone might be useless anyway since the
entire infrastructure is pretty well gone.
