From: "Joanna Boulter"
Reminds me of my grandmother who, so the story goes, used to comment on the
WW2 news: "Now if *I was England . . . (I would do such and such)."
Yes, Joanna. I think most folks feel that way.
In countries that do electing, the Social Contract (to borrow a term used
recently in a friend's yet-unsubmitted poem) determines those who will run
for office as well as which carefully selected emotional issues will be
campaigned. Not-winning means a brief loss, to some few, of global
advantage, even tho many say that no matter the political party, the Social
Contract will prevail. I tend to believe that, having seen it played out in
all sociopolitical structures.
The wonderful rare exceptions, tho, buoy me immeasurably. They are
people---not always "leaders"---whom most of us pray we will be able to
recognize, strengthen and support. That assumes a mighty Trust and an
equally mighty Hope, and these valuable "actions," are understandably
discouraged.
