Mind drifting like the clouds today. I was thinking about the Hanoverians,
how it took three generations before they spoke decent English--wasn't
worth the bother, apparently. Whereas Catherine the Great made herself over
into a true true Russian.
One thing led to another led to this:
RUSSIAN HISTORY
At the court of Elizabeth, Czarina of all the Russias,
the women danced in
enormous skirts, under which, at a signal,
the men dove. "They rut
like peasants," Catherine thought, herself
more given to privacy. As to the horse--
apocryphal: she prefered
to ride on top.
