I really really like the Guy Davenport story, 'The Trees at Lystra,' in
his book, Eclogues, in which a young boy narrates the visit of Paul &
Barnabas to a small village, & what is more or less their failure
there.
Which god(s), anyway?
But I'll side with Alison, Robin, & Mark here: it doesn't matter how
much a religion preaches peace, so long as it also demands, at the
point of a sword or gun, that everyone else must believe in it.

There are places named for
other places, ones where
a word survives whatever happened
which it once referred to. And there are
names for the places water comes and touches.
But nothing for the whole.
