The post title references a song by Loudon Wainwright about his
(presumably then infant, and breastfeeding) son, Rufus, called "Rufus
was a tit man" (Rufus turned out to be gay. And his sister, Martha,
wrote a song about her dad called "Bloody Mother Fucking Asshole". As
both have albums of their own out at the moment, one can read about
this sort of thing in the papers to one's hearts content).
One of the things I noticed skimming through Creeley was that tits
(so-called by him) came up in quite a number of places. I was rather
struck by the fact that he didn't call them something else (something
politer or more "poetic" maybe), and that the usage seemed rather
hopeful, like D. H. Lawrence's attempts to recuperate other coarse
terms and press them into loving service. "Tit" as a diminutive of
"teat" has one foot at least in the land of innocence, even if the
other is planted atop a pile of grubby newspapers.
I really should get into the habit of commenting my code.
