Dear All,
In my idle moments I've wondered if I should apply for Big Brother, in
order to experience the obsession with TV and celebrity from the inside. I
decided against it because I didn't relish the thought of being locked up
in a house with strangers and being watched 24 hours per day, with cameras
even in the toilet. After the second year of the show the Big Brother
producers went out for sensation and conflict in order to get ratings. The
third year was notorious for dividing the house in two with plastic bars
and making the people on one side of the house live on basic rations while
the producers plied the other side with champagne, chocolate, and luxury
foods. During that year one house mate climbed the roof in order to get out
(this was before the division however, and before the house mates knew the
set up was going to be "heaven and hell"). This past year the producers
were accused of deliberately choosing house mates who were unstable so
punch ups would occur -- one fight broke out in the wee hours of one
morning and another couple achieved the dubious honour of becoming the
first UK Big Brother "bonk" (they climbed under a table and took off their
microphones, and the only thing that could be seen under the tablecloths
were their feet. Still, the bookies paid out for the first live sex on Big
Brother UK). I wish Germaine luck. The presenter is promising that the show
will be "evil" so who knows what they are going to do to all the house
mates. One thing for sure is that every move, and I mean every move, of the
house mates is going to be followed in the tabloids and in the celebrity
magazines here, as well as on the live Net feed and the live TV feed on cable.
Yours,
Ivy
