One of my favourite forms of participatory performance is
floor-singing at folk clubs. If you do something with a refrain,
everyone joins in, in multi-part harmony, normally with lots of
sevenths and parallel fourths. For quiet songs, it's a low murmur that
rolls around the room. Loud songs (shanties and suchlike) can get
quite raucous.
