Jill mentioned the shortened game pof the one-day cricket variety - twnety
overs a side. As with all novelties, it came and went in a blaze of media
hype this summer, but next summer they may try to imbed it in the official
program. In English county cricket, they play it off a weekday evening
because they have such long twilights. We don't down here in Oz, so it
happens during the day mainly - even though we have excellent ovals under
light.
I didn't like it much as a game of cricket but it was interesting to watch
'creativity' come back into the game with some interesting 'new' strokes and
the use of part time bowlers in pinch-hitting situations ... It will be back
next summer as a spectacular event to boost ticket sales, but whether it
will last as an official part of the International Cricket calendar is open
to specualtion. Who would have thought one day cricket would've gained such
a permanent place? (All hail Kerry Packer ...)
Regards to sports fans everywhere ... of any code ... but get out there and
have a little hit yourselves: the poets with the longest careers are surely
the fittest ... maybe ...
