That's what happens in competitions. I've never won one in my life; when I
was young this depressed me, but then I got wise and realised it was no
reflection, for good or bad, on my poetry or me. Since then I've judged a
couple of competitions myself. It's no way to read or evaluate poems,
that's for sure, and I have sworn never to do so again; competitions are
committee work, and anything that has too many bits sticking out is most
unlikely to get more than a shortlisting - if that - because in most cases
several people have to agree on what makes a "good poem". So, the
inevitable "Yes Minister" compromise (remember that episode when James
Hacker gets made PM?)
