Only once I met him, heard him
knowing that extended moment I
was in the presence of what
measure spoke
of smallest motions
what that audience as
one knew with him then
could carry into night
make new again
hold dear as memory
together into a future
for words love
that possibility in each
moment's silence sound
recognition of what's gone

He saw the dark as a ragged garment
spread out to air.
Through its rents and moth-holes
the silver light came pouring.
