Nevertheless, for all the faults of the state, Arnold thought (Culture and
Anarchy) that rebellion against the State was both irrational and, as the
State was the sacred embodiment of the "best", as the embodiment of culture,
even blasphemous.

They do. I do. (Every writer makes her own tradition) It's the bases for
those canons that are endlessly (and rightfully0 disputable.
True, half true and untrue are interesting divisions. How is a poem true,
half true or untrue? Is it "true" the way a carpenter speaks about a piece
of wood, or "true" in the way a journalist might expect, or "true" in the
way an actor might mean? Or all or none of the above?
