I can't think of a worse terrain than language on which to fight
battles over national/political identity. It's such churned, boggy,
confused ground. Any firm position you take is likely to be swept away
a moment later in a tide of slurry.
"Authenticity" is such a camp notion - the idea of cleaving so
steadfastly to something so factitious...
