Chairs in the School of Arts at Brunel University

Competitive salary and performance related pay

As part of significant investment and academic expansion in the School of Arts, the University is pleased to offer six newly created professorships spanning the full range of its activity - Drama, Creative Writing, English, Film and Television, Journalism, and Music. Brunel is a research-led University and the School of Arts has a growing international reputation, with high-profile research projects and archives, newly constituted research centres, and innovative and world leading researchers and practitioners.

Successful candidates will be outstanding and committed academics with strong international research profiles and proven records in teaching and administration who wish to take a leading role in developing the School's research to the highest levels.
You will contribute to the teaching of our new and existing taught MA programmes, to the supervision of our rapidly expanding numbers of PhD students, and to research leadership and strategy in this growing, innovative and forward-looking School.

Chair in Drama and Performance (Ref: EPA0036-1)

We are seeking an established specialist in contemporary theatre and performance studies, ideally in one of the following areas of our established research strengths: performance and new technologies, directing/devising, performance and critical theory, and writing for performance. You will join a growing drama/performance team (currently 10, including a Professor and a Reader) with strong international research profiles centred on both publication and performance practice. Drama has a large number of PhD students, an MA in Contemporary Performance Making, and is launching a new MA in Digital Performance in 2006.

Chair/Reader in Creative Writing (Ref: EPA0037-1)

We are seeking a leading figure in either the practice and/or the critical study of Creative Writing to undertake important developments in Creative Writing research and the expansion of postgraduate provision for the University. You will be expected to take a leading role in the subject area, stimulating research activities and developing links and associations with established writers to enhance the research and teaching culture. You will take a significant role in the School's popular and successful MA Creative and Transactional Writing programme, a new MA in Novel and Short Story Writing to commence in 2006, and the development of single-honours BA Creative Writing to start in 2007.

Chair/Reader in English (Post-1900 Literature) (Ref: EPA0038-1)

We are seeking an established specialist in any area of post-1900 English Literature who will join a team of 13 full-time academics in English including a Professor, a Reader, and four Senior Lecturers. English at Brunel is known for its commitment to innovative, marginalised, popular and non-traditional texts with special emphasis on the cultural significance of such literatures across its key research areas of the Renaissance, Victorian literature, contemporary and creative writing (the School houses the Brunel Archive of Contemporary Writing). You will be expected to take a leading role in stimulating and enhancing research activities and establishing national and international partnerships and networks, and will contribute to a new taught MA in Contemporary Writing to commence in 2006.

Chair in Film and Television Studies (Ref: EPA0035-1)

Applications are welcomed from leading academics in either of these fields. Current research strengths in Film and Television Studies include cult media (the School houses the Cult Film Archive), the documentary, videogames, media policy and regulation, and cinemas ranging from Hollywood and American independent to British, European and East Asian. The current team of nine includes a Professor and three Readers, and all staff have strong records of research and publications. The subject has an established MA in Documentary Practice and will commence two new taught Masters programmes in 2006: MA Cult Film and Television, and MA Digital Games Theory and Design.

Chair in Journalism (Ref: EPA0034-1)

We are seeking a dynamic and committed member of staff to undertake important new developments in journalism studies, including leading a new taught Masters in journalism theory and practice to commence in 2006. Applications are welcomed both from candidates with distinguished professional experience and from leading scholars researching and publishing within the field. Journalism is already included in aspects of the School's established Masters programmes in Documentary Practice and Creative and Transactional Writing, and this new professorial post offers a significant opportunity to lead the development and expansion of Journalism as a distinct subject area at Brunel.

Chair in Music (Ref: EPA0033-1)

Music research at Brunel focuses on contemporary music practice and we are seeking a candidate who may be a composer (in any field), performer, or musicologist with a strong core-discipline in keeping with our contemporary-centred ethos. The staff team of eight supervises a large number of PhD students, and includes a Professor and internationally renowned composers and performers. A key aspect of current research is an interest in the examination of contemporary 'interfaces', for example, between music and technology, composition and improvisation, creation and performance, music and video/film/theatre, popular and classical cultures, Western and non-Western music, music and psychology, music and cultural context.
