CARTOONING THE USA: America Through The Pen Of Political Cartoonists ~
TUESDAY 18th OCTOBER ~ 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. ~ The British Library
A day-long event at the British Library Conference Centre brings together a
trans-Atlantic team of eminent cartoonists. Kevin (KAL) Kallaugher (Thomas
Nast Award-winner, 2004), and Matt Davies (Pulitzer Prize winner, 2004 and
first winner of the Herblock Prize) will draw on their experience to speak
on 'The Political Cartoonist in the USA', in a session to be chaired by
Steve Bell (The Guardian) - himself a keen observer of the USA and of
editorial cartooning in the USA. Another panel will bring together two
award-winning British cartoonists, Nicholas Garland (The Daily Telegraph),
and Peter Brookes (The Times) to present their observations on America from
this side of the Atlantic.
Chris Lamb, author of "Drawn to Extremes: The Use and Abuse of Editorial
Cartoons in the USA" will lead off the day's events with a talk
on 'Cartoons and the War on Iraq'. A third panel in the afternoon will
take an historical look at British cartooning perspectives on America, with
Allen McLaurin of Lincoln University speaking on 'America through British
Eyes: the 1940s', and Colin Seymour-Ure covering 'Views of America since
Watergate', under the chairmanship of cartoon-enthusiast, Lord Baker of
Dorking. The British Library's own collection of political cartoons will be
the source of a small exhibit mounted especially for the conference by Dr
Matthew Shaw, US Curator at the Library.
Registration for the conference includes refreshments and a buffet lunch,
and costs only £15 (£10 for students). Bookings must be made in advance,
with a closing date of 14th October. The British Library and its Conference
Centre are located on Euston Road, next to St Pancras station. The
conference is organised by the British Library's Eccles Centre for American
Studies, and booking forms can be found on its website:
