Themed session related to topic 3. Globalization and Culture
Announcement and cfp: Literature and Globalization
150-word abstracts are invited for the session 'Literature and
Globalization', as part of topic 3 of the LCC Conference ('Globalization
and Culture'). Though papers have to be presented in English,
literatures in any language will be considered. Possible themes are:
- The politics of writing: beyond the centre/periphery debate;
territoriality and transnationalization;
- The politics of reading: local, national and international audiences;
cross-cultural intertextuality;
- The politics of the market: selling the 'exotic', promoting the
'other'? Multiculturalism- the 'cultural logic of multinational
capitalism'?
- The politics of criticism: from commonwealth and comparative
literature to postcolonial studies and 'world literature'; 'Third World'
criticism;
- Literature as a culture industry: the politics of publishing, literary
festivals, international prizes and author 'stardom';
- Genre, canon and cultural imperialism/resistance: transnational
adaptation of literary 'classics' to other media and forms;
- The politics of translation: dominant and excluded languages, literary
multilingualism and inter-lingual writing.
