spm_create_images, if I remember correctly, comes with spm99, so it may
not work with spm2.

I had mask problems with kids data, too, and I adapted a script to
specify a custom mask post hoc (based on the coregistered segmented
anatomicals). Most of the times, it works, although there sometimes are
weird voxel/world-space issues (so good luck :). Take a look at the
attached script.
