Blogging? I hope your efforts encompass RSS feeds. (I do both.)
The number of organisations in the UK that have woken up to RSS is pitiful.
Anyone who doesn’t know what I am talking about could start here:
http://www.drydenmg.com/id8.html
Read the quote: “While perhaps not in widespread use now, the day will come
when the online location of a company's RSS feed will be just as much of a
PR pro's email signature file as his or her email address, homepage, and
phone number.”
I have already used RSS to impress a couple of my clients that I know what I
am doing. It is an unbelievably inexpensive way of telling people what you
are up to. No need for email or daily visits to a web site.
Blogging, a subset of RSS, could well be a flash in the pan. So far it is an
early adopter thing with a few savvy blabbermouths shouting their mouths
off. It will be very different when everybody and their dog has a blog. I
mean, the corporate world has already taken to it, which is a sure sign of
the beginning of the end.

STEMPRA is happy to work with any members of the science communication
community – whether from psci-comm, the Ri or the BA – and we welcome ideas
for meetings. (We’re discussing something on blogging now – Mike, it would
be good to involve the ABSW on this …)
If the Ri or the BA wants to host a meeting soon, stempra will be happy to
organise. I shall be at the Science Communication conference at The Royal
Society on Monday/Tuesday next week. If anyone from this list is there and
wants to chat about topics for a working lunch, please do grab me.
Alternatively, drop me a line off-list …
Thanks

With regard to content - in the absence of STEMPRA meetings - which were
always geared to the practical - can we have sessions on the mechanics of
communicating - not at the basic nuts and bolts level but, for example, how
to use novel electronic media (blogging, sms ad so on) to communicate; or
sources for desk research on attitude and marketing surveys relating to
young people; or using agencies - when, how to brief, how to choose.
I know its not upstream engagement but eventually, when we've all swum
upstream, paddled around a bit and identified our issues and stakeholders
and publics, someone has to work out the range of practical tools to use.

Great. So if the community wants a London meeting, they will come.

Thanks for the offer Gail, will definitely explore further.
Mike - The BA are running the events 'on behalf' of the science
communication community, in partnership with ecsite-uk and anyone else
interested in coming on board, hence the extra effort trying to get people
to use the list to discuss topics of interest so we provide people with what
they want.
We trying to build the community's skills not Roman Empires.

Progress over my taxi. But it takes me just 30 minutes to get from Gatwick
to London. Then the time to the destination depends on where it is. Often
just a 10-minute walk to the DTI.
But back to meetings in London, what is to stop someone else setting up a
Science Communication Working Lunch?
The BA may think it is the only game in town, it is certainly into the Roman
mode of empire building, but there are other organisations. What about the
RI? You don't even need on organisation to put on an event. Just do it.
The ABSW has regular meetings for people in its neck of the woods. These
happen at the RI, thanks to the fine folks at the Science Media Centre.
