Explorations are more rewarding, for sure. Totally with you on the Mieville
comments: pulp fiction meets high Marxism, though that's not his only
virtue: it would count for nought if he didn't write stories that are
impossible to put down. It's a pretty heady mix. I've also been privately
amused how, in all the commentary I've read on Iron Council, I have not read
_one_ reference to the fact that the leading character is gay, something
hugely foregrounded in the book. The gender stuff in the books is as
interesting as the sentient cacti and crays and frogs. Fascinating stuff.
And any SFF writer who starts with a quote from Khlebnikov is already
looking pretty interesting.
