Does his present role in your company depend on him having standardised eye
sight, i.e. is he required to meet a set standard. If this is the case and he at
present does not meet that standard but if everything goes well with his surgery
the company could expect him to reach this standard then you could argue in
favour of the company supporting him.
I am sure they would argue precedent setting etc and I have to agree with Car
that these ops don't do well and can in cases exacerbate the condition beyond
its current state.
Hope this helps

We have an employee who is going into hospital for vision correction. Wears
glasses for myopia and has been reject as a retained firefighter, therefore
decided his only option is to have surgery. The company is saying this is
cosmetic and therefore he is not entitled to sick pay. (Policy, written in
the hand book) Would your organisations say the same? I have never been
faced with this problem before and he is a really good guy, is there any way
I can make a case for him on the health side? I would appreciate any
thoughts on this subject. Sian
