The Benfield Hazard Research Centre has recently published 2 working
papers on mainstreaming disaster risk reduction in organisations.
'Social learning and adaptation to climate change' by Mark Pelling and
Chris High (Working Paper 11, June 2005) is based on recent research on
the ability of organisations in the UK to respond to rapid climate change.
It develops a language and model for examining relational spaces as places
of learning and adaptation within organisations. This is followed by a
discussion built around interviews conducted with key informants from
different kinds of organisation.
'Mainstreaming disaster risk reduction: a tool for development
organisations' by Sarah La Trobe (Working Paper 12, June 2005) outlines a
method for assessing the extent and process of organisational
mainstreaming that has been developed and piloted by the NGO Tearfund.
Both papers are based on presentations given at a seminar
on 'Mainstreaming Disaster Risk Management: Organisational Learning and
Change' held at University College London on 21st April 2005. This is part
of the Integrated Planning against Risk (IPAR) series of seminars funded
by the Economic & Social Research Council
All the seminar's outputs can be downloaded from the IPAR website
