This team based in Colombo, Sri Lanka, was set up immediately after the
tsunami by adopting two stricken communities in immediate need. It has
taken a little time to get bank accounts sorted and the information below
has come in today. It seems to be a well organised, inspired, energetic,
committed group and worth supporting. The information below has come to me
indirectly and I have no personal connection with any of its members.
Donations would obviously be welcomed.

James

"Help Sri Lanka has been set up by friends Claire, Declan, Nigel, Polly and
Psyche. It is a fund for anyone who would like to contribute money to help
victims of the tsunami in Sri Lanka in a direct, personal way. We are
working at community level in Unawatuna, a south coast Sinhalese village.
We are also working in Mutur, a Muslim/Tamil refugee camp south of
Trincomalee on the east coast. Both communities were utterly devastated by
the tsunami.

Our immediate aim is to fill the gap by providing disaster relief while the
government and the international aid agencies get coordinated. As a group
of friends and professionals in Sri Lanka we are able to get aid to our
chosen communities with minimum fuss – we have no overheads, we are quick
off the ground and we can meet real needs as they arise.

At the receiving end we have resident friends and contacts who are leaders
in their communities, and in this way the relief aid we provide can be
distributed quickly and fairly. At the same time, through our professional
network in Sri Lanka, we are able to coordinate with other relief agencies
to inform them of new needs, to share resources, and to give these
communities the best of both.

In the short term your money has been and will be spent on clothes, shoes,
candles and matches, mosquito nets, cleaning equipment to clean houses
still left standing and to clean community places after the removal of dead
bodies, fuel for the generator to keep the field hospital in Unawatuna
running, medicine and water purification.

In the long term the money will be used to rebuild people's homes and
livelihoods. We hope such practical inputs will help our communities come
to terms with the trauma and loss they've experienced and move forward with
hope and purpose.

The money we have received so far has made a real difference to people's
lives in Unawatuna and Mutur. If you would like to join us, please follow
the instructions below. Any amount, however small, is deeply appreciated.
