Do you know this excellent UNICEF article about African child rearing
practices? Page 16 may start to indicate that vigorous movement may be an
acceptable approach for some communities.... (I wouldn't recommend it
myself!)

Dear ISPCAN Members:
Does anyone know of any African traditions to soothe crying babies?
Is there a tradition where the baby is held by his head with feet dangling
and then shaken? Some sort of cream is also used with this procedure.
This is supposed to be an old time remedy that has been outlawed. The
family is from Senegal.
