Dear Clarissa
In relation to the Republic of Ireland, the latest National figure re mode
of birth is 2000. The following is an extract from the 'Report on Perinatal
Statistics for 2000'.
Delivery by caesarean section increased again for 2000, although only
marginally from 20.4 per cent of all births in 1999 to 21.3 per cent in
2000. The rate of caesarean section has now increased by 81.5 per cent over
the decade from 11.8 per cent in 1991. While the rates of caesarean section
are different for singleton and multiple births, the rate of the change over
the last decade is higher for singleton births compared to multiple births.
20.5 per cent of singleton and 50.3 per cent of multiple births were
delivered by caesarean section in 2000 compared to 11.3 per cent and 30.7
per cent, respectively, for singleton and multiple births in 1991. This
represents a rate of increase of 81.9 per cent for singleton births and 63.9
per cent for multiple births over the decade.
Regards
