Joanne, your work sounds fascinating - it may interest you to know that
two clinical colleagues, Louise Simpson and Katriona Trafford, and I,
are currently undertaking focus groups with midwives, around their
perceptions of the nature of expert midwifery, and, specifically, around
expertise in the area of normalising birth. It would be good to meet up
to discuss your work and ours in Brisbane.
All the best

Hello, I am a US nurse-midwife and, currently, a doctoral candidate at
Vanderbilt University. I have practiced as a midwife for over 25
years, as well
as participated in US midwifery education.
I am researaching midwives' belief in normalcy, as it influences
clinical
decision-making during labor and birth, and, eventually, how that
contributes
to favorable outcomes. While I am currently focussing on US midwives,
I am
fascinated about how this concept may operate for other midwives in
other
countries' maternity care systems.
I am hoping to complete my study and graduate by Dec 2005. I am
making
plans to come to ICM in Brisbance, and would be keen to listen to all
kinds of
midwives' understanding of normalcy.
Greetings to Holly Kennedy, who is on my dissertation committee! This
is an
interesting way to say hello!
