Dear Sigridur
Sorry for the delay (I'm on sick leave but couldnt resist
sending this info to you). The results of a recent survey we
did, is presented below, if you need more info please et in
touch off the line, Its not possible to send attachment
through this list).
4.5.3 Length of visits
The average length of visits for each health professional,
recalled by mothers, are summarised in Table 6. The lowest
length of visiting time is stated to be with GP’s.
Table 6. Average length of visits
Health care professional Length of visits (min)
Midwife 17.6
GP 9.5
Obstetrician 16.2
There is general satisfaction with the length of visits, as
can be seen in figures 13, the majority of women perceiving
the length of visits to be about right in all of the groups.
The highest proportion of women who thought the length of
visit was about right, was also the longest average visit ie
with midwives.
All the best

4.5.4 Waiting times
Generally, waiting times for community appointments ie with
the midwife or GP, were of similar average length (as shown
in Table 7), but for hospital-based obstetricians this was
doubled.
Table 7. Average waiting times to see health professionals
recalled by mothers.
Health care professional Waiting times (min)
Midwife 14.1
GP 13.6
Obstetrician 27.8
Of the women who responded to this section, a large
proportion expressed general satisfaction with the length of
waiting times for GP’s and midwives but nearly one third felt
that it was too long (figure 14). In contrast, nearly three
quarters of respondents felt that waiting times for
obstetricians were too long.
Approximately 40% of women were cared for in their pregnancy
by an obstetrician in combination with other health
professionals. This relates quite closely to the proportion
of women who stated that they had had pregnancy
complications, which was approx 34% (see section 4.1, figure
3).

>Dear College,
>
>My name is Sigridur Sia Jonsdottir and I am a director of
Midwifery at the
>High-risk prenatal clinic, Reykjavik health care centre,
Iceland.
>
>It would be very helpful if you could please share with me
the length of a
>single appointment for prenatal visit by you for a normal
(low risk)
>pregnant women as well as high-risk pregnant women. It
would also be
>helpful to know if the length is the same for a single
caregiver (midwife)
>and how long it is for two or even more caregivers at same
visit
>(midwife/GP/OB).
>It will also be interesting to know if you think the length
is
>appropriate, to long or to short.
>
>In Iceland, we currently have usually 20 or 30 minutes for
appointment and
>60 min for a booking visit.
>The reason for this request,is that here in Iceland we are
in the process
>of adjusting the NICE Guidline from England, for our
Prenatal care. There
>the length of a prenatal appointment is not mentioned, just
what should be
>included in the visit.
>
>A respond to this request will be very much appreciated.
>With regards, Sigridur Sia
