From the 7-9th September 2006 the University of Sunderland will be
hosting Sounding Out 3, a three day international symposium on sound in
the media.
Keynote Speakers include:
John Durham Peters, Associate Professor in Communication Studies at the
University of Iowa, USA, and author of 'Speaking Into the Air'
Gianluca Sergi, Lecturer in Film Studies at the University of Nottingham
and author of 'The Dolby Era'
Martin Spinelli, Senior Lecturer in Media & Cultural Studies at the

The aim of Sounding Out is to promote links and dialogue between
practitioners and theorists of sound (e.g., of radio, film, video, TV,
sonic art, electro-acoustic music, computer games design, audio-books
and new digital media).
The main themes of Sounding Out 3 are:
(i) the relationship between theory and practice
(ii) media convergence (contemporary and historical)
(iii) the relationship of sound and image, hearing and vision
The programme consists of keynote papers, presentations of sound-works
and themed panel sessions of papers by delegates. Breakfasts, lunches
and dinners will be provided on campus with a four course dinner on
Friday at the National Glass Centre, adjacent to the Media Centre.
Overnight accomodation is provided in modern halls of residence on the
banks of the River Wear overlooking the Media Centre where the
conference will be taking place.
Delegate fees are £280 corporate (including all meals and two nights
accomodation) and £140 for students and unwaged.
More information is available from our website at
