FREE Lecture: The Mail Coach Era
Tuesday 18 October at 7.00pm in the Phoenix Centre, Phoenix Place, WC1X 0DL
Although they were only operational for some sixty years, the Royal Mail
coaches have left behind an indelible romantic memory. No Christmas would
be complete without some cards showing a mail coach with cheerful festive
passengers trotting through a snow-covered landscape.
This lecture looks at the rather different reality of life on the
coaches. The coach service provided the livelihoods of many different
workers, including ostlers, coach makers, drivers, guards, sorters, leather
workers, post boys, innkeepers, and of course, hundreds upon hundreds of
horses. This combined group of people and animals had to keep the service
running despite poor roads, bad weather, inevitable accidents and even the
occasional crime.
