CILIP welcomes one thousandth Affiliated member
CILIP member Marilyn Jackson receives special commemorative certificate at Members' Day
Marilyn Jackson, Head of Information Resources at Ashton Community Science College, Preston, received a special commemorative certificate on Thursday 27 October, to celebrate becoming the one thousandth Affiliated member of CILIP: the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals.
In addition, Marilyn will receive a year's free membership of CILIP during 2006.
Marilyn was welcomed into Affiliated membership by former CILIP President Margaret Watson, and also by Jim Jackson of the Affiliated Members' National Committee, at a short presentation immediately before CILIP's Annual General Meeting at the School of Oriental & African Studies in London.
"I am very honoured to have been chosen to represent all the others who, like me, work in what can be quite an isolated working environment," said Marilyn Jackson. "Being an Affiliated Member has given me the encouragement to develop my library career knowing that I will gain recognition for it by a professional body, and I look forward to working closely with CILIP in the future."
Jim Jackson, of the Affiliated Members' National Committee added: "Having worked closely with CILIP over the development of the Framework of Qualifications I am delighted that it seems to be delivering what members want in terms of skills recognition." He continued: "It also gives me great pleasure on behalf of the National Committee for Affiliated Members to welcome Marilyn Jackson as our thousandth member - and I look forward to welcoming many more like her."
Affiliated membership is open to anyone working in a post within a library or information service which does not require professional qualifications. The number of Affiliated members in CILIP has increased by almost 30% over the past year, as a result of the exciting new opportunities for personal development and recognition offered by CILIP's new Certification Scheme for Affiliates.
"I am very pleased that we have seen such a rise in Affiliated membership and that many of these new members are going on to get their ACLIP. It's a real success story," commented Margaret Watson, one of the principal architects of CILIP's Framework of Qualifications, which for the first time allows Affiliated members to achieve paraprofessional qualifications.
The Framework, which was launched in April 2005, also provides for revalidation of existing professional qualifications, new routes to Chartership, and a mentoring scheme for members who do not have access to an existing scheme through their place of work.
