Re Donna Harper's enquiry about recording cable and satellite broadcasts I notice that the ERA has what appears to be an updated leaflet/booklet on their website at http://www.era.org.uk/ERA.pdf which covers material held on computer servers and other digital stuff. Usefully it states that the licence covers recording broadcasts that are "not encrypted or encoded" and for "general reception". Thus satellite broadcasts are by their very nature "encrypted or encoded". The licence appears to only cover those channels listed by Heather Dimmock recently ie BBC TV and Radio, ITV Network, Channel 4 and E4, Five and S4C. I had a nagging feeling that there would be a problem over the recording of feature films - and this does seem to be an area of confusion with a fairly widely held general view that they should be bought if avalable. The leaflet if confusing in this area "...some feature films and advertisements are not covered by the licence..." and then goes on to suggest that such films can be recorded. I'm not expert on the ERA licence so have aread and see what you think.

Are we now free to record cable and satellite broadcasts? I thought, as Heather Dimmock stated on 11th August, that the licence covers BBC TV and Radio, ITV Network, Channel 4 and E4, Five and S4C.
Thanks
