We are pleased to announce the launch of ALISS (Association of Librarians and Information professionals in the Social Sciences) http://www.lse.ac.uk/library/other_sites/aliss/ a new group for librarians and information professionals in the social sciences. The group is a not-for-profit unincorporated professional society and its purpose is to:
* Provide opportunities for networking and self-development
* Offer a forum for communication
* Create a network of cooperation and a forum for discussion about emerging issues in social science librarianship.

Membership of the group is open to:
* libraries/ information units in all sectors (government, commercial, voluntary sector, academic sector) associated with the social sciences
* information workers/ librarians at all stages of their careers
Benefits of joining ALISS include:
* invitations to a range of relevant events for social science librarians
* discounts at all our events
* free subscription to ALISS Quarterly our journal which replaces ASSIGNation.
Membership fees for 2005/6:
Corporate / Institutional membership £35 (to include one copy of ALISS Quarterly)
Individual rate £20 (to include one copy of ALISS Quarterly)
Forthcoming events
We have a number of events coming up including:
15th June British Film Institute tour - a few places remaining.
22nd July Visit to London Metropolitan archive (to take group of up to 30) 2.15-4.15
22nd August Visit to Institute of Directors (they have a new library) group of 10
Also we are planning a visit to the Marx Memorial Library - date to be confirmed.
This year's summer conference will be held at the British Library Conference Centre on the 26th July entitled "Open access and institutional repositories". More details to be announced shortly, but places will be limited to do get in touch if you wish to secure a place.
