Bangor to consult with CILIP on library restructuring
University of Wales Bangor agrees to CILIP's offer of assistance on library
service restructuring proposals
Professor Merfyn Jones, Vice Chancellor at the University of Wales Bangor,
has written to Bob McKee, Chief Executive of CILIP: the Chartered Institute
of Library Professionals, confirming his intent to consult with CILIP on the
University's proposals for restructuring its library service. This follows
several weeks of correspondence between Dr McKee and Dr Kevin Mundy, Senior
Assistant Registrar (Planning) at the University.
"This is good news," said Bob McKee on receiving Professor Jones's suggestion
of an initial meeting. "We understand that progress is being made at Bangor
following the consultation exercise and we look forward to a constructive and
focused discussion with the University authorities about key issues and
options."
CILIP originally offered the services of its extensive network of academic
library and information service managers last February, to suggest
alternative and less damaging ways of achieving the £300,000 year-on-year
library savings that the University required. In a letter to Professor
Jones, Dr McKee acknowledged the need for financial stability at the
University, and accepted that the library service needed to be part of an
overall institutional rationalisation of spending. However he expressed
concern at the likely effect on learning and research, and offered to work
with the University in finding alternative solutions to the ones proposed.
Dr McKee has replied to the Vice Chancellor welcoming Bangor's intent to hold
a meeting with CILIP. He hopes that the meeting can be arranged as soon as
possible.
